If you listen to the new album from singer/songwriter Vanessa Peters ‘The Burden of Unshakeable Proof’ make sure your little ears prick up to hear the lyrics. If you dig on Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton, Aimee Mann or any of those profound female singer/songwriters you will enjoy listening to Vanessa Peters.

The album title is irrevocably related to the content of this release. Peters sings of buried truths, heartbreak, vulnerability, depression, gossip and even gets a tad philosophical at the end in the track ‘Atmosphere’. I can’t help but stipulate Peters is verging on the slightly phenomenological with this record.

I have recently been going through some massive life changes myself and I could really relate to feelings of helplessness, pain that feels like it has you in a cage, not knowing what’s real and emerging into another existence. So if you’ve ever felt any of these ways Peters and I have so you’re not alone! The content isn’t depressing though so don’t let that deter you from listening – it’s more reflective and bittersweet.

As a matter of fact the production of the album is nice and laid back. Perfect for snuggling up in your mum’s homemade quilt laid out in a papasan chair with a tasty beverage. It’s more of a homely, comforting record than one that will have you crying yourself to sleep. Peters utilises poetic analogies and metaphors sampled from domestic settings and small towns. The symbolism of home and heart is featured throughout the album giving it that lived-in and through feel.

I’m undecided on whether this is a heartbreak album or not. It’s an undeniable tapestry of life, love and loss, all of which seem to reoccur throughout life regardless of lovers past or present. So if you’re in the mood for a laid-back, alt-country, sentimental record, give this a spin. It’s officially available on March 1st 2016 and available for Pre Order now on Bandcamp!
